Adoption & Us – welcome to my blog about how we became a family

No-one knows what’s around the corner. You can’t predict what will happen. When you ache with an emotional pain that never leaves you, it takes over every waking hour. I’m not sure if I’d known what was in store for the future all those years ago, it would have made things easier. Maybe if I had known, I could have enjoyed the times that should have been happy, joyous even. But with the weight of sorrow I carried every day, it was impossible. Only those who go through the life changing experience, know how it feels, what it creates and what it destroys.

Our journey to becoming a family began 23 years ago, 14 years later, I heard someone call me Mum for the first time. It took a long time for that to feel right. Now I couldn’t imagine not being Mum. Everyone has different reasons to join the adoption pathway. Whichever way you reached it, for us it was not an easy decision. It came after years of heartache, illness and loneliness.

Today, we are a family, we’ve had big struggles, we still have struggles. But, with little or no support, we got there.

Adopting was the best thing I have ever done.

I hope my blog helps someone when making their decision or to know that they are not alone. Maybe something we’ve experienced might just make a difference to their day.

It’s sad but true that I have had to use pseudonyms for myself and my family, but, it was fun thinking of new names; so, we are: Isabelle (I’ve always liked that name), Tom (tall, dark, chunky jumper… I can dream), Lula (sophisticated – my eldest daughter would love it) and Fi (mischievious, mad, full of love and kindness). So, that’s us.
